AMA Projects were engaged by Transport for NSW to convert the dilapidated existing building at the Bowenfels depot in Lithgow into a new soil laboratory.

The works involved:

  • demolition of the existing storerooms, bathrooms, and kitchen
  • the creation of new spaces including a new soil laboratory with high tech equipment, offices, a meeting room, sample delivery area, bathrooms, and kitchen
  • external works including a new ramp and landing, new awnings
  • a full roof replacement.

Previously unidentified asbestos was encountered on site during the construction process. Due to existing good working relationships with subcontractors and the client, AMA Projects were able to get the asbestos contractor on site at short notice which prevented long delays to the programme.

The works were originally scheduled to be completed in two stages which was a challenge due to the tight timeframes. AMA Projects were able to successfully manage occupancy requirements to allow the work to be delivered in one stage allowing for completion before the key dates.
