Collaboration Key to Successful Design and Construct

Designed by DJAS Architecture, AMA Projects were engaged as Construction Manager to perform the building refurbishment works at the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, located on the Australian National University campus. The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust building was constructed over 20 years ago and presented several unique design considerations.

In close collaboration with DJAS, AMA Projects worked to turn an outdated interior space into a spacious, modern working environment with a number of collaborative and individual workstation settings.

The updated layout allowed for the inclusion of a generous breakout space that can be used in a ‘boardroom’ style capacity, soundproof focus booths, additional offices, and updated amenities. A key design consideration involved the works to replace the existing external windows with a double-glazed system to improve thermal and acoustic properties within the building.

Subtle tributes to Sir Winston Churchill were included throughout the fitout, including vinyl butterfly graphics relating to his love of breeding rare butterflies and notable quotes decorating the glazing and walls throughout the fitout. The colour palette was kept soft and neutral, enabling the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust to showcase interesting artefacts and works by their fellows, further tying into the tributes to Sir Winston Churchill.

DJAS Principal Director, and Project Director for the works Alisa Moss, is a longstanding fellow within the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust and recipient of the prestigious A.V. Jennings Churchill Fellowship earlier in her career to study design aspects relating to indoor environment quality and healthy buildings.

Ms Moss said that being able to deliver this project was a unique way for her to give back to the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust,

“We thoroughly enjoyed working with the Winston Memorial Trust team to create a resilient, adaptive “hybrid” physical work environment for the staff to embrace multiple work settings that respond to their preferences in these evolving times. We are thrilled with transformation we have achieved working with some unique restrictions of space and structure,” said Alisa Moss.

For AMA Projects, the delivery of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust building refurbishment was one where our capability for delivery was well-placed due to the unique structural requirements and design considerations of the fitout.

“It was definitely an exciting one for us to deliver. The scope of works was very unique and we enjoyed working collaboratively with DJAS and the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust. We’re very pleased with how it all came together,” said Tim Ryan, AMA Projects Project Director.

Chief Executive Officer of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, Adam Davey, said that after 20 years, it was time to reconfigure their office to offer their staff a contemporary and flexible working environment.

“The refurbishment of our office space has not only provided us with increased comfort – greatly appreciated during Canberra’s cold winter – but we now have an extremely flexible work environment that is suited to a multidisciplinary team and adaptable to different ways of working,” said Adam Davey.
